These four terms get used constantly in skincare, often interchangeably, and usually without much explanation. They are not the same thing — but they are related, and understanding how they connect is the difference between buying ingredients and buying results.
Here is the short version: amino acids build peptides, peptides build proteins, and growth factors are proteins. Stem cells are the cells that use all of it. Everything below unpacks that chain.
Amino acids are organic compounds found naturally in the skin. There are about 20 of them, and the sequence in which they combine determines which peptide — and ultimately which protein — the body builds.
Essential amino acids must come largely from the diet, from sources like eggs, fish, chicken, legumes and nuts. Non-essential amino acids the body can synthesise itself. Glycine, proline and hydroxyproline are the three that make up the bulk of collagen, and the body assembles them into the triple-helix structure that gives collagen its strength.

This is the question we get asked most often in clinic: how does the product actually get in?
A formula can contain a thousand amino acids, but without a delivery system they sit on the surface. If surface work is the goal — supporting NMF and barrier function — that is completely fine. If the goal is collagen production in the dermis, an ingredient sitting on the stratum corneum is doing nothing.
There are two ways to solve it.
In clinic, mechanically. Micro-needling creates direct channels. Sonophoresis uses ultrasound. Iontophoresis, electroporation and magnetophoresis all use energy to drive actives deeper.
In the formula itself. Permeability enhancers temporarily increase the rate at which skin absorbs, letting larger molecules — amino acids, peptides, other actives — travel further. Liposomal delivery encapsulates the active inside a lipid structure; because the skin's own barrier is lipid-based, it recognises and draws the payload in. Lamellar emulsions mirror the skin's own layered lamellar architecture, so actives slot between the structures and migrate down gradually.
The practical takeaway: match the delivery system to the depth you need. Ask where the active is meant to work before you ask how much of it is in the bottle.
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids. Which peptide you get depends on which amino acids are strung together and in what order — and that determines what it does.
Peptides have been in professional skincare for a long time because they are so versatile. They can stimulate collagen, support the barrier, improve hydration, accelerate repair in stressed skin, improve elasticity and firmness, and calm inflammation.
There are four broad types worth knowing:
Quality matters as much as category. The grade of peptide used determines what it will realistically do.
A stem cell is an undifferentiated cell that can do two things: copy itself, and become a specialised cell. In skin, the main types sit in different places and do different jobs.
Epidermal stem cells live in the basal layer and drive renewal of the epidermis, dividing into keratinocytes. Hair follicle stem cells sit near the bulge of the follicle and contribute to wound healing. Dermal stem cells live deeper, supporting fibroblast activity and therefore collagen and elastin production.
Here is why this matters. If a stem cell carries DNA damage, it does not stop working — it keeps producing cells, but irregular ones. A slightly malformed keratinocyte still travels up through the layers and still arrives at the surface, where you see it as texture, tone or dullness. Protecting stem cells is protecting the quality of every cell they go on to make.
Plant stem cell extracts are used topically to support these natural processes. They deliver antioxidants and growth factors, support cellular regeneration and texture, reinforce the barrier, and — in the case of apple and grape-derived actives — offer a brightening effect useful for pigmentation.
Growth factors are naturally occurring proteins. Since proteins are peptides bonded together, and peptides are made of amino acids, this is where the chain comes full circle.
They regulate cell growth and differentiation by binding to receptors on the cell surface. When a molecule (a ligand) binds to a growth factor receptor, it triggers a cascade of reactions inside the cell — driving division, tissue regeneration and healing.
The main families are epidermal growth factor (EGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor (TGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and keratinocyte growth factor (KGF). Which one is relevant depends entirely on which function the skin needs performed. EGF and TGF are both central to repair and wound healing.

Biomimetic simply means the skin recognises it. Recognition is the point — you are not forcing something foreign into the skin, you are giving it more of what it already knows how to use.
Are peptides and amino acids the same thing? No. Amino acids are single compounds. A peptide is a short chain of amino acids bonded together. Peptides in turn bond into proteins.
Do peptides really stimulate collagen? Signal peptides instruct skin cells to produce structural proteins including collagen. The result depends on the specific peptide, its concentration, and whether the formula can deliver it to the dermis where fibroblasts sit.
Are plant stem cells actually living cells? No. Topical plant stem cell actives are extracts — they deliver antioxidants, growth factors and signalling compounds that support your skin's own stem cell activity. They are not live cells being transplanted.
What is the difference between a growth factor and a peptide? Size and complexity. Growth factors are full proteins made of bonded peptide chains. Peptides are shorter. Growth factors bind to specific cell receptors to trigger regeneration cascades.
Does my skincare need a delivery system? It depends where the active needs to work. Barrier and hydration support happens at the surface, so no advanced delivery is needed. Collagen stimulation happens in the dermis, and without a delivery system the active will not get there.
Can I get enough amino acids from diet alone? Diet is the foundation — protein sources supply the nine essential amino acids. Topical application supplements that supply directly at the site, which is where professional skincare earns its place.
